Cannabis Laws in Thailand 2026 — What You Need to Know

A practical guide to the current cannabis regulations in Thailand for tourists and residents.

Thailand made global headlines in June 2022 when it became the first country in Southeast Asia to decriminalise cannabis. Since then, the regulatory landscape has continued to evolve. Here's what you need to know about cannabis laws in Thailand as of 2026.

The Current Legal Status

Cannabis was removed from Thailand's Category 5 narcotics list on 9 June 2022. This means that cannabis flower, extracts, and products are legal to buy, sell, and possess in Thailand. Licensed dispensaries like Mr Weed Pattaya operate legally under Thai law.

However, there are important rules to be aware of:

What's Legal

  • Buying from licensed dispensaries — You can purchase cannabis products from licensed shops throughout Thailand
  • Possessing cannabis — There is no legal limit on personal possession for adults
  • Growing at home — Thai nationals can register to grow cannabis plants at home for personal use (registration with local authorities is required)
  • Medical use — Medical cannabis is fully legal, and prescriptions are available from licensed practitioners

What's Not Allowed

  • Smoking in public spaces — While possession is legal, smoking cannabis in public places can result in fines under public nuisance laws. Always consume in private spaces, your accommodation, or in designated areas like cannabis cafés
  • Selling to minors — It is illegal to sell cannabis to anyone under 20 years of age
  • Selling to pregnant or breastfeeding women — Dispensaries are prohibited from selling to pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Driving under the influence — Driving while impaired by cannabis is illegal, just as with alcohol
  • Extracts above 0.2% THC without licence — While this regulation exists on paper, it primarily applies to manufactured products and food/beverages rather than flower purchased from dispensaries

For Tourists

As a tourist in Thailand, you can legally purchase and consume cannabis from licensed dispensaries. There is no requirement for a medical card or prescription to buy flower and most products. Simply visit a dispensary, show your ID to verify your age (20+), and make your purchase.

That said, keep in mind:

  • Some hotels may have their own policies regarding cannabis use on their premises — always check with your accommodation
  • Cannabis purchased in Thailand cannot be taken out of the country — attempting to cross international borders with cannabis remains illegal
  • Be respectful of those around you and consume responsibly

Medical Cannabis Prescriptions

If you'd like a formal medical cannabis prescription, Mr Weed Pattaya has an in-store doctor available daily from 11am to Midnight. A consultation can result in a 30-day medical certificate, which can be useful for expats and long-term visitors who want documented access to cannabis for medical purposes.

The Regulatory Future

Thailand's cannabis laws continue to be refined. The government has been working on comprehensive cannabis legislation to replace the current interim regulations. While the direction has generally been supportive of the legal cannabis industry, regulations may change. We recommend checking for the latest updates before your visit.

At Mr Weed Pattaya, we stay fully compliant with all current regulations and will continue to update our practices as laws evolve. If you have any questions about the legal aspects of cannabis in Thailand, our knowledgeable staff are always happy to help.
